Catherine Whitfield is sure that she will never again be able to trust anyone in the medical profession after the town doctor’s excessive bleeding treatments killed her mother. Despite her loneliness and her broken heart, she carries bravely on as Cimarron Creek’s dutiful schoolteacher, resigned to a life without love or family, a life where dreams rarely come true.
Austin Goddard is a newcomer to Cimarron Creek. Posing as a rancher, he fled to Texas to protect his daughter from a dangerous criminal. He’s managed to keep his past as a surgeon a secret. But when Catherine Whitfield captures his heart, he wonders how long he will be able to keep up the charade.
With a deft hand, Amanda Cabot teases out the strands of love, deception, and redemption in this charming tale of dreams deferred and hopes becoming reality.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus
by Erin Morgenstern
400 pages
Published by Doubleday

Plot: The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love - a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.

True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead. (2018, Goodreads.com)

Review:  The Night Circus was one of those books you just love reading.  It's magical and interesting and beautifully written.  There are so many elements to this story that it's hard to really put it into words.  It's not just a love story about Marco and Celia.  In fact, these two characters don't really even interact very much until the middle of the book.  This was one part of the story-line that I was disappointed with.  I would have liked their love story to have started sooner.  It felt like it took too long for Marco and Celia to actually interact and fall in love.

But this story is not just about Marco and Celia - it is also about the circus and everyone involved.  From the designers to the entertainers, the Circus holds the fate of them all.  But the true puppet masters are Marco's teacher and Celia's father, whose "game" has deadly consequences for any who wish to interfere.

The structure of The Night Circus is written in 2 parts.  The present and the future.  There is a third main character introduced named Bailey, but you don't really know what his part is in the circus until almost the end of the book.  But, it does provide for a good plot twist.  I did feel that there were unnecessary parts to the story that made it drag from time to time.  I would have liked for more interaction between Marco and Celia instead.

As the summary above states, Marco and Celia are in a competition and the circus is their venue in which to display their skills in magic.  However, as Marco and Celia get older they not only realize that they are in love, but that one of them must die in order for their "game" to end.  They are tired and just want to be together.  But the magic binding them to their competition is unbreakable unless one of them dies.  They are bound to the circus, and although the other entertainers have no part in the game, their fates are also entwined with the continuation of the circus as well.  Their choices are impossible ones and sacrifices will have to be made.  Recommended for ages 15 and up!

This is a standalone novel.

Lone Star Book Bloggers' Tour: Mornings on Main: Guest Post by Author Jodi Thomas

MORNINGS ON MAIN:
A Small-Town Texas Novel
by
Jodi Thomas
Genre: Mainstream Romance Publisher: HQN
Number of Pages: 320 pages

AVAILABLE APRIL 10, 2018!

Jillian James has never had a place to call home. Desperate to make some quick cash before moving on again, she agrees to help an elderly woman close her beloved quilt shop.
Connor Larady’s grandmother has owned the shop all her life, but lately she has struggled with Alzheimer’s. Connor’s seventeen-year-old daughter has spent her whole life in Laurel Springs, Texas, and she feels restless. When Jillian moves to town, she represents travel, adventure and excitement.
Weaving together the story of three generations of women looking for a place to belong, Mornings on Main asks us to consider how we make our memories—what we remember, what we forget, what becomes part of our story—and remind us that it’s not where we live, but how we live that counts.

“Which Character is Me?
Guest Post by Jodi Thomas

I love wandering into a small town and discovering its history and beauty… and most of all its people.

With MORNINGS ON MAIN I did just that in my mind.

People often ask me which character is me in a book.  I always say, “Them all.”

In this story I was a young woman driving through town looking for a place to stop for a few months.  Looking for a piece of her life that is missing.  She traveled light from town to town, not even packing a memory when she moved on.

I was an old woman losing her memory after a lifetime of collecting the history of the town she loved.

I was a teenager, wild and afraid.  Fighting to break free and make a few memories before life made her settled down.

MORNINGS ON MAIN weaves these three women’s stories together as the stories of the town’s history are displayed in quilts.  Quilts have always fascinated me.  I remember lying under my grandmother’s quilt from that drifted down from the ceiling.  I remember my mother quilting long after her mind had had been invaded by Alzheimer’s.  I loved seeing my sisters’ quilts displayed on their bedroom walls.

But, I don’t quilt.

My mother only read my first book before she stopped reading completely.  I’ll never forget what she said about my patchwork stories that blend together.  She said, “Jodi, you quilt with words.”

Stories dance in my head all the time, but now and then one lives on after I turn the book in.  MORNINGS ON MAIN is still waltzing in my thoughts.  I hope that people come as alive to you as they did to me.

Come visit my town and I hope you’ll stay for a while,

Jodi Thomas
