According to Dr. Maggie Maguire, happiness is serious—serious science, that is. But science can’t always account for life’s anomalies, like why her fiancĂ© dumped her for a silk-scarf acrobat and how the breakup sent Maggie spiraling into an extended ice cream–fueled chick flick binge.
Concerned that she might never pull herself out of this nosedive, Maggie’s friends book her as a speaker on a “New Year, New You” cruise in the Gulf of Mexico. Maggie wonders if she’s qualified to teach others about happiness when she can’t muster up any for herself. But when a handsome stranger on board insists that smart women can’t ever be happy, Maggie sets out to prove him wrong. Along the way she may discover that happiness has far less to do with the head than with the heart.
Filled with unforgettable characters, snappy dialogue, and touching romance, The Theory of Happily Ever After shows that the search for happiness may be futile—because sometimes happiness is already out there searching for you.

The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker

The Minimalist Home
by Joshua Becker
240 pages
Published by Waterbrook Press
(December 2018)

Summary: One of today's most influential minimalist advocates takes us on a decluttering tour of our own houses and apartments, showing us how to decide what to get rid of and what to keep. He both offers practical guidelines for simplifying our lifestyle at home and addresses underlying issues that contribute to over-accumulation in the first place. The purpose is not just to create a more inviting living space. It's also to turn our life's HQ--our home--into a launching pad for a more fulfilling and productive life in the world. (2018, goodreads.com)

Review: This book will change your life!  I've been wanting to declutter my home for a long time, but I never really knew where to begin.  The popular phrase "Less is more" is something I kept thinking about when I read this book.  Why do we have to have so much stuff? We really don't need it all.  I think the key thing I took away from Becker's book is to remember to keep only what is of special value to you and get rid of the rest.

In The Minimalist Home you learn how to break down the declutter process room by room.  You start with the easier rooms and then move on the harder ones.  I like how he outlines this for you and really gives you a lot to think about as you reduce the amount of unnecessary bulk/stuff in your house.  I'm still in this process and it's not something you need to get done in a week.  Go as quickly or as slowly as you need to.  I'm being more conscious of stuff and space in my home and it really has made a difference.  I am now applying this to my office at work and it feels great!  I definitely recommend this book to everyone!

The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

The Valiant
by Lesley Livingston
384 pages
Published by Razorbill Feb. 2017

Plot: Princess. Captive. Gladiator. Always a Warrior.

Fallon is the daughter of a proud Celtic king and the younger sister of the legendary fighter Sorcha. When Fallon was just a child, Sorcha was killed by the armies of Julius Caesar.

On the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is excited to follow in her sister's footsteps and earn her place in her father's war band. She never gets the chance.

Fallon is captured and sold to an elite training school for female gladiators—owned by none other than Julius Caesar himself. In a cruel twist of fate, the man who destroyed Fallon’s family might be her only hope of survival.

Now, Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries, deadly fights in and out of the arena, and perhaps the most dangerous threat of all: her irresistible feelings for Cai, a young Roman soldier and her sworn enemy (Amazon, 2018).

Review: Fallon, the daughter of a Celtic king is captured and sold as a slave to Rome during the reign of Julius Caesar.  She becomes a female gladiator and has to fight in the arena for survival. It’s a brutal and unforgiving life, but she’s been training since she was a child to become the famed warrior her older sister Sorcha once was.  So, becoming a gladiatrix is not difficult for Fallon to grow accustomed to. But, life as a warrior slave in the Ludus Achillea is not how she envisioned her future. With the advice of some unexpected allies, Fallon learns she can earn her freedom by performing well in the arena and winning the admiration of the crowd.

During this time she meets Caius Varro, the son of a wealthy senator, and her and Cai develop a forbidden romance.  There is not a lot of interaction between Fallon and Cai, so falling in love was slightly unrealistic. I would say it was more falling in lust than love.  I did enjoy the plot overall. It was an interesting story-line with the gladiator warrior being a female. I would have liked to have seen more interaction between Cai and Fallon, and maybe that will happen more in book 2.  The only part of the story that didn’t make any sense to me was the ending. Obviously, there is going to be some sort of cliffhanger because it is a series, but the ending was not realistic in my opinion. I can’t say too much without spoilers, but a decision that Fallon makes is very surprising.
