1. Penn Station – whenever I train to and
from New York, I have to pass through Penn Station. And honestly, it’s a
disaster. Having visited magnificent train stations all over the world, it’s a
shame that that visitors to America’s biggest city are welcomed so poorly.
Knowing what used to be there – the stunning station I wrote about in my book –
makes the tragedy of its loss even more profound. While there are unnoticeable
traces of the old station in the current one, the one obvious one is a granite
eagle that is perched outside – one of many that used to adorn the perimeter.
I’d read about the eagles in my research, and in fact, they start the story. So
when I saw one up close – his firm eyes, the detail in his feathers, his proud
stance, I just cried and cried. The good news is that the loss of Penn Station
heralded public interest in saving other New York landmarks. And as Grand
Central was on the chopping block next, it owes its life to its sister station.
2. Ellis Island – Though none of my scenes
take place here, I do have several immigrants who feature prominently in the
book. So, Ellis Island was an excellent place to explore to understand the
immigrant experience. One can only imagine all the emotions that have been
experienced inside its walls.
3. The Tenement Museum – Visiting this
museum was vital for understanding the living conditions of many people living
in New York at that time. Bathrooms were sometimes shared with twenty families,
and water running from faucets might come in brown. These were just a few of
the details that helped me paint a picture of life at that time.
4. Coney Island – I’m sad to say that I
haven’t actually been to Coney Island, but it does play a pivotal role in one
scene. So, I’ve only visited it virtually, though documentaries, photographs,
and articles. But I am thankful that so many records exist because I did get
the feel of being there!
5. Macy’s – In the second part of the
book, Vera works at a glove counter at Macy’s. I have always loved that
building. It claims to be the world’s largest department store, and it is a big
magical place, sitting right there at Herald Square. My favorite part are the
wooden escalators – I wrote about them in the book, and you must see them if
you go there!

Camille recently left an award-winning real estate career in San Antonio to become a full-time writer. Along with her husband of 19 years, she enjoys raising their four children. She has a bucket list that is never-ending and uses her adventures to inspire her writing. She overdoses on goodies at farmer’s markets (justifying them by her support for local bakeries) and belts out Broadway tunes whenever the moment strikes. There's almost nothing she wouldn't try, so long as it doesn't involve heights, roller skates, or anything illegal. The Memory of Us was Camille's debut novel. Her second, Before the Rain Falls was released on May 16, 2017, and The Way of Beauty is her third novel.
