Cleo loves bows. She wears her hair in a bow and decorates her room with bows. Cleo is bow crazy. Learning to tie a bow is very difficult for some people but Cleo remembers how to do it from a cute story she once heard. It is about a little rabbit with very long ears and a very helpful fox who shows her what to do to keep them clean. This is the story of how Cleo learns to tie a “bunny ear” bow. Exercises in manual dexterity build self-esteem in children. Knowing how to tie shoestrings, scarves and more into a bow is a useful and rewarding skill. Teach a child a useful skill. Build confidence and self-esteem that lasts a lifetime. Other books in the Learn To Tie With The Rabbit and the Fox series are the book with that name in English, Spanish, and Tagalog plus Nellie Knows How To Knot A Neck Scarf and Ned Knows How To Knot A Necktie.

Cleo Can Tie a Bow: A Rabbit and Fox Story by Sybrina Durant is an adorable picture book that teaches children how to tie bows.  Durant's use of storytelling creates a fun and entertaining way that shows young readers not only how to tie bows for their hair, but for their shoelaces too.  In this story, Cleo is obsessed with bows.  She loves everything about them and has them everywhere. To help her remember how to tie her bunny's ears into a bow, she creates a story about how a fox helps a rabbit tie her ears together into a bow so she doesn't get them dirty.  The story is broken into two parts.  The first part is Cleo and her love for bows.  The second is Cleo's story about the fox and the rabbit.  At the end of the story, Durant shares a catchy song (along with a video link), about Cleo learning how to tie a bow.

The illustrations by Pumudi Gardiyawasam are cute and colorful that will appeal to young readers.  Gardiyawasam has a clear separation in color scheme when the story is about Cleo, and when the story is about the fox and the rabbit.  Cleo's pages are mostly pink, while the fox and rabbit's story is told in the forest with vivid greens and oranges.  There is a beautiful and distinct contrast between the two "worlds" in the book.

An adorable and educational way to learn how to tie bows and/or teach the steps to others. A great addition to your home or school library!  Perfect for ages 2-6 years old, with assistance, since it's a little too complicated for young kids to tie the bows by only looking at the pictures.

  1. GREAT review! I love that the illustrations so perfectly pair with the story (and the story within the story). And sounds like this is a lovely read along to complement the process of teaching little ones about tying their shoes. Thanks for the post.
