A Time to Fly by award-winning author Diann Floyd Boehm, is an adorable children’s book about a little bluebird finding the courage to leave his nest and learning to fly.  After his brother and sister fly away to join their mother and father, one little bluebird is reluctant to leave.  After some encouragement, the mother bluebird is able to help her son not only learn how to fly but be brave enough to step out of his comfort zone.

Boehm does a wonderful job with the relationship between the mother bluebird and her son.  She gives the mother bluebird such a gentle and patient voice throughout the story. Her words are soothing and help keep the baby bluebird calm as she encourages him to be brave and try something new. The baby bluebird is reluctant to leave the comfort of home just like most children.  Through the actions of the baby bluebird, Boehm does a great job reflecting the behaviors that young children also exhibit when they are hesitant to change. Yet, she also shows that he still has that childlike curiosity which helps motivate him (along with the encouragement of his mother), as he learns to fly for the first time.  A Time to Fly is beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Nancy Hoover.  The watercolor illustrations she creates perfectly fit the story with pastel colors that bring a peaceful and positive energy to each page. The gorgeous blue, yellow, and orange shades really bring the story to life.

Such a heartwarming story to read to young children who also have to face leaving home or adapt to change. The dyslexia friendly font is also perfect for teachers or parents who have dyslexic children and need the help when reading. A great lesson on adapting to change and how each child learns at their own pace.  A great addition to any home or school library.
